What is family EcoTherapy?

Family Therapy in Nature, or EcoTherapy, offers a friendly way of exploring difficulties in a safe and creative environment provided by Nature.

The eco-family therapy sessions will include a nature-connection activity to help parents and children or teenagers to engage in family talks through Nature i.e. a chance to identify, share their emotions and worries using the language of nature e.g. through a stick, a rock, the sea, a leaf or a tree.

What is Eco-family therapy?

Eco-family therapy offers the opportunity for families to benefit from spending time in nature as a source of wellbeing whilst providing a safe space to talk to each other about the fears, the worries and the challenges of family or school life.

There is less focus on talking and more on connecting with nature and each other by engaging in activities e.g. making natural art or decorating sticks and having conversations through natural metaphors e.g. rocks are heavy like worries or overwhelming feelings.

It can include a combination of whole family sessions, sessions with parent/s or one parent and a child/children, or couples sessions. This allows a tailor-made approach to each unique family, including single parent families, same sex families and extended family, foster or adoptive families, or couples and the format is negotiated as part of the overall therapeutic goals and reasons for seeking therapy. It can also change and evolve based on ongoing feedback.

Why therapy in Nature?

It is a more friendly and safe way of having therapy by meeting outdoors. Being in nature helps children, young people and adults to feel more grounded and relaxed in their body, they feel calmer in the mind, and more in touch with their feelings through using all the senses.

What to Expect from a family EcoTherapy session

After a gentle walk through the woods, there will be a guided family activity in nature followed by a facilitated family talk about sharing emotions, fears and worries with each other. This will reflect the reasons for therapy, struggles and resources in each family member and the therapeutic goals agreed at the beginning. We finish with reflecting on the session and sharing ideas about improving family life and the kind of family you want to be.

The structure of a family EcoTherapy session

1. Gentle walk around the woodland

2. Nature-connection Activity & nature focused conversations

First saying hello to Nature at the entrance of the woodland. An easy walk to relax body & mind to release stress and feel calm.

It could be one of the following:
• Explore the woodland area collecting sticks and other natural objects e.g., leaves, moss, feathers etc. to decorate sticks
• Chose a spot and make a heart individually or in pairs about the things you love.
• Chose a tree and observe all the details in the current season. Mark the tree with a special sign e.g. rocks or leaves at the base or a path leading to it
• Identify with an animal and make a den/nest as a home for them

3. Walk back along the green road to the Car park

We will walk back to the starting point sharing some thoughts about the session before saying our goodbyes

"Our eco therapy sessions with Chiara are invaluable for me and my family and I feel certain we wouldn't have progressed as far without them.

In terms of our son, there is no way he would have come to a room to meet a therapist due to his anxiety and lack of trust in adults. However, being outdoors meant that Chiara was able to meet him, really get to know him and better support us as a family as a result of this. He was able to relax in an environment he understood and found being outside both regulating and enjoyable. This would have happened had we been in a more formal, traditional therapy situation.

As a couple, it has allowed us to face some really painful things and look at the intense situation we have found ourselves in. The ability to move around, let nature swallow some of the hurt and anger we feel and for Chiara to expertly and gently guide us through, has been invaluable.

On a personal level, I have undertaken a lot of therapy during my life which although has been useful, discovering eco therapy at this stage has been life changing. I have always loved nature and am much more comfortable outdoors where I am able to regulate and think more clearly. The difficult things I have been able to face with Chiara’s professional guidance has been extraordinary and I firmly believe that I would not have been able to do this work so effectively, had we been in a traditional therapy room.

As a family, we appreciate our eco therapy sessions with Chiara as we firmly believe that they are the right way for us to be processing and working through the issues we face. The sessions are magnified in power for us in being outdoors and are not in the slightest diminished by not having four walls around us.

We all feel her commitment, professionalism and expertise in this particular therapy which we appreciate so much."
